Over the past few years the Garden group have visited many of Kent’s finest gardens and organised some fascinating talks from experienced, and often very well known gardeners. Its March meeting was especially memorable as one of Knole’s own members, Chris Towers, gave a fascinating talk about Irises – a subject he is especially knowledgeable about as a RHS Iris judge and former member of the RHS Herbaceous Committee! He is also a leading light in the Iris Society – no one better to come and talk about Irises!
Chris’s talk was beautifully illustrated with photographs of many of his own Irises produced on two allotments in Otford. He also illustrated his talk with some of his own well executed watercolours, He gave plenty of advice on how to grow these lovely ornamental plants from the regale bearded rhizome irises to the smaller bulb irises which flower early in the Spring. With some 300 species to chose from, growing a few Irises in your garden this year well worth a try!
The group are already looking forward to visiting Chris’s allotments in May to see some 300 irises in bloom.
